Eats Beat: Meat and more on VB Steakhouse’s $20 August lunch deal

Arlington’s newest steakhouse knows how to make friends fast.

First, VB Steakhouse signed up as one of more than 30 Tarrant County restaurants serving a $35 DFW Restaurant Week charity special through Saturday.

Then, VB extended the deal till Aug. 30, donating even more money ($7 of each dinner) to the Lena Pope children’s counseling agency.

On top of that, when a website mistakenly listed VB as also serving a $20 weekday lunch deal, manager Hector Rodriguez said, “Do it.”

So Arlington’s new Brazilian-style churrascaria is serving an 11-meat combination lunch with salad bar, sides, pasta and dessert for $20 through Aug. 30, and at dinner for $35.

The lunch price is almost half what other Brazilian steakhouses charge. It’s worth the drive from Fort Worth, Grapevine or Dallas to Copeland Road in Arlington, alongside Interstate 30 next to Six Flags Over Texas.

VB is new in Arlington, but it’s not new. Owner Roberto C. De-Sa’s Vila Brazil steakhouse in Irving draws customers from both ends of Airport Freeway, and VB takes over a familiar steakhouse space for diners who need somewhere to go since Olenjack’s closed.

VB serves the familiar picanha and various spicy or garlic sirloin churrascos, plus bacon-wrapped chicken, ribs, sausage and a surprising Parmesan pork tenderloin. It’s a typical carnivore’s delight, with some unexpected extras.

The salad bar included not only familiar cold dishes but also quinoa salad, cucumber salad and a hot-food station with pastas. Side dishes included garlic mashed potatoes.

The $20 Restaurant Week lunch also includes either flan or creme brulee, but for an extra charge, diners can order a cognac-flamed cheesecake.

VB Steakhouse is more dark and clubby than, say, a Boi na Braza. It’s closer to a prime steakhouse or Rafain in Fort Worth.

(If you want to try the full Brazilian chow-around, Boi na Braza and Texas de Brazil are offering the $35 special this week only, Rafain through next week. But only VB Steakhouse is serving the $20 lunch.)

Going fast

Ten of the 32 restaurants donating to Lena Pope will offer the Restaurant Week special only through Saturday, the original “week.”

This week is your only chance to dine for $35 at Boi na Braza, Max’s Wine Dive, Piccolo Mondo, Queenie’s (Denton), Reata or Texas de Brazil, or for $45 at Grace, Lonesome Dove Western Bistro or Truluck’s.

Lonesome Dove’s menu features the garlic-stuffed tenderloin that made the restaurant and chef Tim Love famous.

Chef Blaine Staniford’s menu at Grace starts with a chilled peach-basil-goat cheese soup and features grilled trout or Duroc pork with dulce de leche-caramel gelato “butterscotch pudding.”

Ten restaurants will serve the specials through next week, and 12 will continue through Aug. 30.

Restaurants donate 20 percent of each special — $4 of each lunch, $7 of each $35 dinner, $9 of each $45 dinner — either to Lena Pope or to the North Texas Food Bank.

Catch the buzz

Avoca Coffee is the latest restaurant to add a location in the West 7th shops.

Avoca will open at 835 Foch St., the old M Lounge.

The coffees will include both the regular blend and a cold brew, with food from McKinley’s, Boopa’s, Stir Crazy, Swiss Pastry Shop and Le Chat Noir.

After several false starts and the departure of an Einstein Bros. shop with poor parking, Avoca will bring West 7th a much-needed coffee shop to go with Salsa Limón’s taqueria and nearby Righteous Foods’ Stumptown coffee bar.
