Have a date night at this Grapevine grill with steak and seafood for National Wine Month

What better way to celebrate National Wine Month—which originated in California—than to go to a Texas wine grill?

The Winewood Grill in Grapevine is the perfect date night destination to celebrate the best month of the year. While we do not live in California, we can still participate by sipping on some Napa wines.

Not that you need an excuse to have a glass of vino with dinner, but if you want one, here it is.

The Grill is known for its steaks and seafood, and of course, its extensive, 12-page wine selection. But don’t be intimidated—Winewood has an in-house sommelier to help guests decide.

My boyfriend and I made a 30-minute drive from Fort Worth to the Grapevine for our weekly date night. I’ve been to this same area at Mi Dia on a busy Tuesday during lunch. This time, it was Tuesday at 7 p.m., and the parking lots were still packed. We both noticed it seemed to be a hot spot for a meal after work.

We were there to savor all things grapes. However, we also indulged in an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert. Here’s what we tasted.

Date night at The Winewood Grill

One thing I noticed right off the bat was the restaurant was large and popular but not loud. The ambiance was sophisticated and moody, and the best part was I didn’t have to yell across the table to have a conversation.

We started by grazing the vast wine list. It is important to note that they also have four pages of spirits and specialty cocktails like old fashions and lemon drops.

Of course, I went with a glass of Daou Cabernet from Paso Robles, California. This was slightly sweet from the fruity berry notes and all around a smooth glass of wine to sip on. My boyfriend went with a glass of the Pine Mountain Cabernet, another California wine from Cloverdale. This was obviously similar tasting, however, it had more bitterness and spice.

We began with the Quail Knots, and we had a tip to ask for them bacon-wrapped, so we did. These were dark-meat quail legs wrapped in crispy, caramelized bacon. The sauce mainly tasted of miso, sweetened by honey. They were delectable.

We then moved on to our entrees. I ordered the Pan Seared Snapper. This was a crispy white fish, laid on a bed of asparagus, topped with sweet sauteed red onion and citrusy artichokes. I expected it to be more “blackened,” but still was light and yummy. Another menu item that I didn’t try but wish I did was the Pecan Crusted Trout.

My boyfriend of course went for the most expensive item on the menu, but we determined after was well-worth the price. He got the Bone In Wagyu Strip. That’s clearly not enough food so it also comes with a gracious side of Crab Mac and Cheese. When he tasted his perfectly cooked, rare wagyu, his eyes rolled to the back of his head and he went mute. The man couldn’t even come up with the words to describe how good it was.

Our stomachs were crowded, but I can never pass up Crème Brûlée. What I liked about Winewood’s was how thick the custard was. I also heard that their most popular dessert is their Brookie. It is a brownie in a cookie topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel. How could you go wrong?

After our first visit to The Winewood Grill, we both left saying we would go back. I later learned that Winewood won Wine Spectator awards in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

It’s an excellent spot to enjoy a special occasion or to take your family after picking them up from the airport (Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is only six minutes away).

The prices range from $50 to $100 a person. The Winewood Grill is open Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. It is located at 1265 S Main St, Grapevine.
