Taverna Rossa announces winter opening for Southlake

What is up with pizza and Southlake? No sooner does one new joint open — the long-awaited Spin! Neapolitan Pizza opened Wednesday, nearly a year after it was first announced — than we get another coming in.

Taverna Rossa Craft Pizza and Beer announced Wednesday that it’s joining the fray in winter 2015-’16 (and we always include the caveat that target opening dates are hard to hit). Besides Spin!, Taverna Rossa joins Campania, Coal Vines, Mellow Mushroom, Armend’s and others.

There’s also the oddly named Dotto’s Pies & Fries, which is (relatively speaking) off the beaten path; the rest of the aforementioned is either on or very near the main drag, Southlake Boulevard.

Which is where Taverna Rossa will be: Its location is 1151 Southlake Blvd., in the Park Village development anchored by The Fresh Market.

With a little ambition and no fear of traffic, you could easily walk to Coal Vines or Campania (in Southlake Town Square) from there. Taverna Rossa has been slated for the center for some time, but made its own official announcement Wednesday.

“Specializing in unique, rustic thin-crust pies baked in a stone-fired oven,” a release says, “Taverna Rossa settles for nothing less than handmade goodness and hometown flavors with a strong commitment to sourcing local and natural ingredients whenever possible.”

It’s the second location of the pizzeria/beer parlo from 33 Restaurant Group; the first opened in 2013 in Plano.

Taverna Rossa looks to be big on that “local” part: It features Texas brisket from Hamm’s Meat Market in McKinney, Lemley Tomatoes from Canton, and Luscher’s Italian Sausage.

North Texas breweries such as Revolver, Peticolas, Community, Deep Ellum and Lakewood are well-represented on the beer list at the Plano location.
