The hit Broadway musical Newsies is coming to the Winspear Opera House this week. If you’re wondering whether it’s worth it to take your family to see the award-winning show, here are five reasons why you should “seize the day.”

1. It’s better than the movie.

The musical is based on the 1992 film, which was panned by critics and fans alike. But while the movie version received a couple of Razzies, the theatrical show won much acclaim including 2012 Tony Awards for best score and best choreography.

Newsies is inspired by the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1899,” which began when newspaper publishers raised the price for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.

2. It’s a Disney musical so your kids will get a kick out of it.

Disney always knows how to put on a show for the entire family. Newsies is filled with one heart-pounding number after another, which will keep the entertained for at least two hours.

3. If you love newspapers, you’ll love the musical.

I’ve worked at newspapers all my career, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m of a certain age when I may know some folks who as children had their own paper routes. The musical takes you back to the days when print was the primary way people received their news. Look for the antique Chandler & Price printing press used in the show that was manufactured in the early 1900s and is 1200 pounds of solid steel.

4. If you’re already a fan, there’s a new song added to the touring production of Newsies.

Newsies has a large group of dedicated fans, called “Fansies.” If you are a fan, you won’t want to miss the Dallas show with the new song.
