Launched in San Francisco’s Mission District in 1976 by Jean and Jane Ford, Benefit Cosmetics began as a tiny boutique specializing in eyebrow grooming.
Fast forward 40 years later, the brand has expanded well beyond its humble beginnings and offers a full range of cosmetics that includes foundations, blushes and more. This summer, Benefit is getting back to its roots as the leading eyebrow authority by launching a collection of nine new eyebrow products.
In this week’s Fab or Flub? review, I take a closer look at a product in the collection that claims to offer users a fast and easy way to get full, natural-looking eyebrows. Available at Ulta and Sephora, the Goof Proof Brow Pencil ($24) is a mechanical eyebrow pencil with a glide-on, waterproof formula that helps fill and shape eyebrows with precision.
Designed with a goof-proof tip made to fit the angle of your arches, the pencil is designed to mask uneven patches of hair, outline the arches and define the tail of your eyebrows with minimal effort.
The Goof Proof Brow Pencil, which comes in six shades, is a dual-ended product that features a twist-up eyebrow pencil on one end and a spoolie brush on the other.
The pencil’s formula is soft and creamy, and it glides onto to the skin smoothly. The color payoff the product is strong, so you don’t want to get too crazy when applying. A light hand is definitely the best way to go about it.
When using the pencil, I found it best to start by creating small strokes inside the middle of the eyebrow then working my way out to the edges. To finish, I then softly traced along the edges of my eyebrow to create a more defined shape.
As someone who already has thick eyebrows, the pencil did an exceptional job of filling in small areas where my brows were sparse. All in the all, the pencil was a much quicker, efficient option than the eyebrow powders and gels I’ve used before.
Fab or flub?
Fab! Quick and easy to use, Benefit’s Goof Proof Brow Pencil is a saving grace for anyone who struggles to achieve full, natural-looking eyebrows.
With just a few strokes, it fills in patchy areas and defines the arches of your eyebrow without leaving behind any harsh lines. The formula is long-lasting and held up well, even after an hourlong workout at the gym.
Removing the product was easy and can be done with either makeup remover or facial wipes. Though it wasn’t always needed, on days when I wanted to increase the wear of the product from 12 hours to all day, I would apply Benefit’s ready, set BROW! (an invisible setting gel that is also part of the new collection) to my eyebrows.
