Fairway runway report: Looks we loved at Colonial on Day 1
Anybody who’s ever set foot on a golf course knows the game is not just about how you play but how you look.
The pros have upped their fashion ante in recent years -- just check out Jordan Spieth’s head-to-toe Under Armour gear, which continues to fly off store shelves. Pretty fly.
But it’s the patrons at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational who really dress to impress. Every spring, the fairways at Colonial Country Club transform into emerald runways, showcasing everything from sun-splashed sportswear to billowy sundresses to straight-up designer duds.
In other words, Fort Worth golf fans like to glam it up.
Here are three of our favorite looks from Thursday. Fore!
Rhapsody in blues
Amanda and Aaron Edwards, spotted near No. 11 fairway on Thursday, made quite the striking golf course couple -- she in her geometric jumper and he in the plaid button down and powder blue shorts she picked out for him. Amanda’s Maui Jim aviators were a classy touch, too. Aaron was ready for the paparazzi in his Revo shades.
Amanda confessed she was actually dressed for a client meeting at a corporate tent, and that any other day, she’d be casual in a her usual golf gear -- collared shirt and shorts.
She did offer one very valuable Colonial fashion tip: “Just say no to wedges,” she said, tugging up a pantleg for proof.
Trend-setting T
Isaac Dykes’ shirt attracted all sorts of attention Thursday, even a bit of envy. He said at least 10-15 people asked him where he got the simple, but supercool “Spiething” tee.
“Amazon,” said Dykes, when we asked. “And it only cost about $20 (with shipping).”
It’s available in navy and white, and coins a growing new sport: “Spiething,” defined loosely as following and rooting hard for Dallas’ golden boy golfer Jordan Spieth. Dykes, a Fort Worth police officer, was among the large gallery Spiething for Jordan on Thursday.
Spieth finished the day with a solid 3-under par round, to which Dykes said: “see, it works.”
Gladiator glam
Candice Howgene had never been to a pro golf tournament before Thursday, but she sure didn’t look like a rookie. In fact, she made some seriously savvy fashion choices.
Check out those strappy gladiator sandals (about $60, Nordstrom); they could bring Russell Crowe to his knees.
Toss in the gold shorts, Stella purse and charcoal felt hat ($15, T.J. Maxx), and Candice made a bold fashion statement: I am Spartacus, and I will stomp around Colonial in comfort and style.
