With the opening of Wild Detectives bookstore and Deep Vellum Publishing in the last couple of years, it looked like Dallas was having all of the indie bookstore fun. Now, it’s Fort Worth’s turn.

The Last Word, 2700-square-foot bookstore, opens on Cowtown’s near Southside Friday at 615 S. Jennings Ave.

It was started by Paul Combs who decided to pursue his longtime dream of running a bookstore after he was laid off from his job with an oncology management company. As he told bookweb.org., he launched a GoFundMe campaign in to cover initial costs for The Last Word. In five months, he raised $9000.

“I’m probably working harder than I ever have in my life to get things going,” he told bookweb. “But I’ve never been happier doing it.”

He’s stocking more fiction than non-fiction and lots of independently published and local writers. There will also be space devoted to visual art as well as author and book-club events.
