Kat Von D makeup line adds contour eyeshadow quads
If you thought the contouring trend was dying down anytime soon, think again.
Celebrity tattoo artist Kat Von D has added new Shade + Light Eye Contour Quads ($26) to her line of cosmetics sold exclusively at Sephora stores.
Part of the brand’s Shade + Light Contour collection, the easy-to-use eye shadow palettes are designed to transform your eyes through the art of color contouring. Each quad comes with four silky, matte eye shadows that, when used together, enhance the eye’s shape and color.
First impression
As someone with a deep appreciation for unique packaging, I couldn’t help but love that the Shade + Light Eye Contour Quads bear a striking resemblance to little black coffins (a fun nod to Von D’s fondness for all things Goth).
Tucked inside each plastic case is a nice-sized mirror (great for application on the go) and four eye shadows (base, define, contour and highlight). To help avoid confusion, a sticker on the bottom of the quad acts as an eyeshadow legend and denotes what each shade is used for.
You can choose from four color combinations: Rust (matte brownish reds), Sage (matte greens), Plum (matte purples) or Smoke (matte cool grays). For this product review, I decided to try what I thought was the most neutral, work-friendly option: the Rust quad.
For those whose makeup skills might still be somewhat lacking, a card (illustrated with drawings by Kat Von D) provides a step-by-step process for applying the eye shadows. Thanks to this mini cheat sheet, recreating the whole eye look turned out to be a piece of cake.
The eye shadows are silky and highly-pigmented, so I had to approach the application process with a very light hand. Overall, I found the eye shadows to be very easy to work with.
Fab or flub?
Fab!
Whether you’re a makeup pro wanting to add to your collection or just a beginner looking to master eyeshadow application, Kat Von D’s Shade + Light Eye Contour Quads are a top-notch product worth the purchase.
Packed with highly-pigmented eye shadows, the product makes makeup application less intimidating by giving users everything needed to create a gorgeous look (including the simple steps to recreate it).
All of the eye shadows in the quad I tested applied smoothly, blended beautifully and, when used with an eye primer, lasted well all day.
While the purpose of the quad is to use all four eye shadows at once, I found that they can also easily be worn separately or even in pairs.
No matter how you decide to wear them, one thing’s for sure: You’re guaranteed to get lots of wear out of these beautiful eye shadows.
