Nature-friendly activities in DFW starting April 23

▪ A bird ID workshop and walk with master birders Carla Savage and Tom Haase will be April 23 at the Southwest Nature Preserve, 5201 Bowman Springs Road, Arlington. The workshop will begin at 8 a.m. at Kennedale City Hall Conference Room, 405 Municipal Drive (reservations required; contact Rachel Roberts, 817-985-2135 or rroberts@cityofkennedale.com). Or just join the 90-minute bird walk at 8:30 a.m. at the preserve.

▪ River Legacy’s 27th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. April 23 at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Arlington. Tickets are $8 at the gate. Boat entry fees start at $55. For more information, call 817-860-6752.

▪ The Japanese Garden Spring Festival will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 23 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. April 24 at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Traditional Japanese dance, music, martial arts and tea ceremonies are among the actitivies. Kids activities include kimono dress-up, Japanese storytelling, origami, calligraphy, fish painting and feeding koi. $8, $4 ages 4-12, kids 3 and younger free. 817-871-7685; www.fwbg.org

▪ Euless’ Arbor Daze festival will be 10 a.m.-9 pm. April 23 at the Euless Family Life Center, 300 W. Midway Drive. Activities include tree seedling giveaways as well as the Kidz Zone, carnival rides, food and more. www.arbordaze.org.

▪ Learn how to choose blooming garden plants that hummingbirds and butterflies love during a class at 10:15 a.m. April 23 at all area Calloway’s stores. calloways.com.

▪ The Garden Club Council of Fort Worth’s 62nd annual Flowercade and rose show, noon-5 p.m. April 23 and 1-5 p.m. April 24 at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd. A gardeners’ market will be Saturday only.

▪ The Bob Jones Nature Center Earth Day Spring Celebration will be 2-4 p.m. April 23. It’s $5, free for age 2 and younger. Crafts, story time, hikes and more. 355 E. Bob Jones Road, Southlake. 817-491-6333; bjnc.org.

▪ Join a bilingual naturalist on the trail for a “Nature en Español” hike, 1-2:30 p.m.April 23 at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge. From 1:30-3 p.m. April 24, kids can learn about the importance of milkweed to the butterfly population. Both programs are free with paid admission ($2-$5).

At 8 p.m. April 28, join a night nike of the refuge’s trails. Meet at the front gate. The hike is $10 and requires registration. To register, call 817-392-7410.

▪ Kids ages 18 months to 3 years can learn about seeds, fruits and planting during a free Little Sprouts activity at 1 p.m. April 26 at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd. Class limited to first 16 children.

▪ The Moonlight African Violet and Gesneriad Society meets at 7 p.m. April 28 at the Deborah Beggs Moncrief Garden Center, Fort Worth Botanic Garden, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd.

▪ Watch bonsai artist Rodney Clemons create a boxwood forest on a stone slab at a meeting of the Fort Worth Bonsai Society, 7 p.m. April 29 in the Conservatory of the Deborah Beggs Moncrief Garden Center, Fort Worth Botanic Garden, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd.

▪ The Fort Worth Garden Club’s 30th anniversary “Treasure Our Garden, Treasure Our Past” flower show will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 29 in the Deborah Beggs Moncrief Garden Center of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd.

▪ Get your gardening questions answered with a call to the Tarrant County Master Gardener Association help desk, 817-884-1944. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

▪ Johnson County Master Gardeners also answer gardening questions and give advice 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays. Call the Johnson County Extension Office at 817-556-6370 and ask to speak to a master gardener.
