Printer gives its owner a Windows 8 headache

I have an HP printer that will not work with my new computer running Windows 8. Do I need to buy a new printer or is there something I can do to make it work?

Most printers, new or old, should work with Windows 8, though some older ones may not.

I have a 5-plus-year-old HP printer and it works very well with my Windows 8 (now 8.1) system. The drivers for most printers are supplied with Windows 8, but for any reason if they are not, you should be able to find them easily enough. Just go to your printer manufacturer’s website and usually, in the Support area, you can select your model printer and download any needed or updated drivers.

HP made it even easier by providing http://bit.ly/TKnKl4 to help you find the Windows 8 driver required for your particular printer.

I switched to the new Yahoo! email and now I can see some pictures in a few emails, but not all of them. How can I get the pictures to appear? Also, some things are ending up in the Spam folder that aren’t spam. Can you help me, Mr. M?

Some images will not appear in email, as you referenced, as a result of a default Yahoo! Mail setting that is actually designed to protect (not annoy) you, though more often than not it has the latter effect.

The good news is that it can easily be changed if you prefer living on the edge. Go to your Yahoo! Mail Inbox and click the little gear icon in the upper right corner, then choose Mail options from the drop-down menu that appears, or you can select the Options tab at the top of your Inbox, if you see that.

Make sure you have General selected under Mail Options on the far left. You will see a variety of options for your mail settings. Scroll down to Spam Protection. Remove the check mark beside “Show images in emails only from my contacts and certified senders.”

From the drop-down menu choose “Always except in Spam folder.” Images will then be displayed in any message that isn’t classified as spam.

If a message you want to view turns up in the Spam folder, open the message and select Actions > Add to Contacts. Messages from that sender will thereafter go into your Inbox, with images displayed.

Twinkie Facts

The Twinkie, long recognized as the cornerstone of any well-balanced diet, was created in 1930 by James Dewar, a plant manager at the Continental Baking Company.

From its humble beginning as “Twinkie Fingers,” today more than 500 million Twinkies are produced every year. Despite urban legends that suggest the shelf life of a Twinkie is measured in decades, the actual shelf life is 25 days per Twink.

Before he departed for the Big Cupcake in the Sky at age 88, Dewar said that the secret to his long life was to “eat Twinkies every day and smoke a pack of cigarettes.” What, no bourbon?
