Nintendo's Best Strategy Series Returns in September
The June 2026 Nintendo Direct was quite tame on Tuesday morning, but there were a couple of key games to talk about. While everyone was focused on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time being remade, strategy fans were finally treated to a release date for the latest game in the Fire Emblem series.
Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave will come out on September 17, 2026 for the Switch 2. There should be more fanfare around this franchise, but the last release on the Switch, Fire Emblem Engage, wasn't met with the same critical or fan adulation as 2019's Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Nintendo's website has the rundown on what to expect in this latest game in the ever-popular strategy franchise that is equal parts addicting and maddening.
"Worthy fighters from all over the land have come to Dagsion, the capital city of the Dagdan Empire, to compete in the Heroic Games for the chance to win one wish. Among the combatants are four heroes tied to the fate of the world. Whose fortune will lead them to victory?"
"Between matches, you can explore the world to strengthen your army and find resources. Train and recruit allies in Dagsion, or venture out into the land to fight bandits and monsters, delve through dungeons, and more. You have limited time to prepare, so make every action count."
"Command your units in strategic, turn-based combat against the enemy. Use everything in your arsenal to turn the tide, including your heroes' special abilities. By learning the strengths and weaknesses of your units and directing them wisely, you just might gain the upper hand."
Through the years, Nintendo has found a nice balance between focusing on combat and lifestyle simulation gameplay and character moments in the series. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave will have to find that in-between again so fans of both of the series' strengths will be satisfied.
