PlayStation Settles for $7.85 Million - Are You Eligible for a Cut?
PlayStation owners across the United States may soon see an unexpected boost to their digital wallets. Sony Interactive Entertainment has reached a $7.85 million preliminary settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit regarding its digital storefront practices.
The legal challenge centered on claims that Sony monopolized the market for digital games by restricting the sale of game-specific vouchers through alternative online shops. While Sony has denied any wrongdoing, the court has preliminarily approved the settlement to avoid further litigation.
Who Qualifies for the PlayStation Payout?
Not every console owner is eligible for a piece of the $7.85 million fund. To qualify for the settlement class, individuals must meet the following criteria:
- Residency: You must be an individual living in the U.S. or its territories.
- Purchase History: You must have purchased at least one of the eligible digital games through the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023.
- Eligible Titles: The list of affected games includes major PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us, as well as popular third-party titles such as the Mass Effect Trilogy and Resident Evil 4.
How to Receive Your Money
For the majority of active users, no action is required. Affected individuals are automatically included in the settlement class and will receive their compensation directly in their PSN account wallet following the final approval hearing.
However, there are specific steps for certain users:
- Deactivated Accounts: If you no longer have an active PSN account, you can apply for a cash payment by emailing qualifying purchase information to the settlement administrator.
- Opting Out: Those who wish to retain the right to sue Sony separately must submit a written request to opt out or object by July 2.
What is the Payout Amount?
The final individual payout remains unclear, as the remaining funds - after deducting up to 25% for attorney fees and administrative costs - will be distributed equally among all class members. The final hearing on October 15 will determine the exact distribution plan.
Gamers are encouraged to monitor the official settlement website for any changes to the hearing schedule or updates on the distribution of funds.
