Grok Users Report Ongoing Connection Errors Amid High Demand-Here's What to Know
According to frustrated users, Grok has repeatedly been displaying "high demand," "can't connect," and "try again later" error messages over the last several days. Here is what users, Grok itself, and xAI say is happening.
What Grok Users Are Saying About the Errors
Haven't been able to use Grok for the past three days no matter the time of day. The message is the same each time.

If they want to require me to get a subscription to use Grok, they should just come out and say it rather than throttle usage and blaming it on high demand. pic.twitter.com/zszAdnrOgG
Over the last several days, there has been a surge of complaints on social media about Grok error messages. Several people have shared screenshots on X as they vented their irritation. The r/grok subreddit has especially seen a lot of activity on the subject. One user posted an image of them successfully connecting with Grok, only to have their second message to the AI receive a "high demand" error.
One recent post came from a user who angrily asked how problems accessing the AI had persisted for days without a statement from the company. "How TF has Grok been unusable for 3 - 5 days, and status says fully operational, and xAI has not even acknowledged the complaints at this point??" That post's comment section featured many users hypothesizing that the errors were an intentional way to get people to sign up for Supergrok.
There hasn't been any evidence that the frequent error messages are intentional in any way. What is clear is that although websites like downforeveryoneorjustme.com have seen spikes in reported Grok issues, even though status.x.ai states it is "fully operational." That begs an obvious question: What is going on? Here is Grok's explanation.
How Grok Explained Its Sudden Uptick in Error Messages
When asked why successfully using it has been hit or miss for the last several days, Grok gave the following explanation of what has been happening: The AI reported that there have been widespread "high demand," "can't connect," and "try again later" errors reported online since "around" April 21. These issues have happened on the Grok website and on X, resulting in reduced availability and delayed or failed responses.
While Grok acknowledged that xAI hasn't given an official explanation for the sudden issues, it stated that "the pattern points to explosive growth in usage overwhelming current server capacity." It stated that Grok's popularity has been climbing, with new feature rollouts adding to the momentum and straining the system's backend. That may be causing the service to prioritize high-tier subscribers.
Finally, Grok provided guidance on what frustrated users could do when they run into the errors. It suggested that if Grok doesn't work on the X app, try it on the Grok website and vice versa. Additionally, it stated that restarting the app or opening it in a new browser window may help. Failing that, the issue sometimes clears up over time, especially during off-peak hours, and it becomes more reliable if users subscribe to a high-tier plan for higher priority access.
