The feline was seen lying motionless on the tracks near the Lindenhurst station on the night of April 11, according to ABC7 News. The engineer who spotted the cat assumed he had died. When the engineer passed the area again later the following evening, he saw the animal move its head and immediately called for a rescue.
The power to the rails was shut off so MTA officers and a rescue team could safely retrieve the injured feline. The TikTok from @fox5newyork shared the effort to save the frightened fur baby.
"The cat was staring at us the entire time - we locked eyes with him. We wanted to make sure he didn't run away," Officer Vikki Machado said.
The orange cat was immediately taken to South Shore Feral Care (SSFC) in West Babylon to give him a full evaluation.
Health Update and New Name
The cat was soon given the moniker Garfield due to his striking resemblance to the famous cartoon character.
A full examination and X-rays revealed Garfield's extensive injuries, including a completely fractured front limb, a broken nose, and two dislocated hips. Despite his serious condition, Garfield's prognosis is promising.

The rescue is requesting donations to cover the costs of Garfield's medical treatment. So far, his injuries have incurred close to $12,000. Funds donated will go toward emergency orthopedic surgery, pain management, and postoperative care.
