Sunset at Saratoga restaurant to open at county airport

MILTON - The Saratoga County Airport restaurant is slated to open in the spring as Sunset at Saratoga Kitchen + Bar.

A spokeswoman for the county said the restaurant, which will be run by Michael Speranza of Ballston Spa, was approved by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 16. According to a resolution passed on that date, the restaurant will lease the space from March 1 to Feb. 28, 2027, for $26,040 a year. The restaurateur will have the option to renew the lease at the same rent the following year, with a 5% rent increase in the following years.

Speranza did not immediately return a Times Union request for comment to discuss the menu and hours of operation. However, the resolution states that the restaurant will be open to the public as well as airport patrons. Sunset at Saratoga will feature dine-in, catering, and takeout options.

In June, the airport opened a new terminal after undergoing a $35.9 million renovation project. The construction of the public terminal was to include a restaurant, conference room and outdoor patio. The project also expanded the hangar.

Originally, the Alexis Diner was slated to open a location in the terminal, but owner Alexi Lekkas withdrew his bid. It remains unclear why.

Since it opened in 1943, the county airport has been mainly a hangar that served as storage for small planes as well as a waiting area for pilots and passengers. The county purchased the airport in 1970. Currently managed by North American Flight Services, the airport has two runways that accommodate small aircraft, mainly private planes and helicopters transporting those headed to the Saratoga Race Course and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Note: Michael Speranza's residence was updated on Saturday morning.
