Fab or flub? MAC Cosmetics Pantentpolish Lip Pencils inspire smiles

After a limited run last year, MAC Cosmetics’ popular Patentpolish Lip Pencils ($20 at MAC Cosmetics) are back as the newest addition to the brand’s permanent collection.

Described as a cross between a lip gloss, balm and lip pencil, the pencils have gained a loyal following in the online beauty community. Fans cite the easy application and a glossy, moisturizing formula, which made me eager to try them out myself in a Fab or Flub “test drive.”

First impression

Like a giant crayon for your lips, the Patentpolish Lip Pencil looks like a cross between Clinique’s Chubby Stick and NARS lip pencils.

It features a blunt tip and a very convenient twist-up applicator, so you don’t have to worry about sharpening the pencil as the tip wears down.

The two shades I tried out were Kittenish (a mauve pink) and Pleasant (a hot pink). I tested both colors on the back of my hand and thought they looked nice and very pigmented. Even better, they were glossy but didn’t feel sticky or thick.

Fab or flub?

Fab! MAC Cosmetics Patentpolish Lip Pencils have really found the perfect balance between a lip gloss, balm and lip pencil, making them a great addition to any makeup bag.

Lightweight and moisturizing, they apply smoothly and feel nice on the lips. For those who love a shiny look without the stickiness of a gloss, rest assured the Patentpolish Lip Pencils add a nice sheen without attracting stray hairs to your mouth, plus they have great staying power and require minimal reapplication throughout the day.
