ClosetSpace app can be personal fashion stylist and wardrobe curator
Recently, one of my colleagues sent me an email with a Fab or Flub idea. Referring to the ’90s movie Clueless that starred actress Alicia Silverstone, she suggested that I try out a fashion app called ClosetSpace.
How are these two things connected, you ask? Well, if you remember, there is a scene in the movie in which Cher Horowitz (Silverstone) is getting ready for school but, instead of digging through her closet, she uses a computer and a “virtual closet” to effortlessly sift through her entire wardrobe to find the day’s perfect outfit.
Even more impressive, her closet is color-coded and categorized by item. Nice.
Of course, my two closets are not wired to spit out perfect outfit combos at the touch of a screen.
This is where the ClosetSpace app comes in. The app allows you to inventory your closet, adding images of items you own to your virtual closet and using the database to curate outfits.
It also weeds out items you no longer use or like. In addition, you can track daily outfits to see what items/combinations you wear the most, as well as search the outfits of other users to gain inspiration.
Sounds pretty cool, right? With the movie Clueless on my mind, I set out to discover whether the ClosetSpace app would earn the Cher Horowitz seal of approval.
First impression
ClosetSpace is accessible on your phone or computer, so I tried it on my laptop first.
After signing up, I pulled up the homepage and was instantly inundated with outfits posted by users. A lot of ClosetSpace’s users are professional bloggers, so the majority of the outfits are impeccably styled. It seemed like a great way to get style inspiration.
The app divides your virtual closet into two parts: My Items and My Oufits. In the My Items section, you can either upload or use links to add images of the items you own.
Once added, these items are categorized by brand, color and style and displayed in groups such as footwear, dresses and handbags. Now, you’re ready to begin making outfits.
In the My Outfits section, an Outfit Builder tab allows you to drag items together to form an outfit you wore that day or an outfit you’d like to re-create, then saves it.
When you wear an outfit, you can chart it on your outfit calendar to track which items you wear most and to avoid repeating outfits too frequently. As I began to add items to the My Items section, I realized that, while it’s an easy process, it’s also a bit tedious. However, within about a day-and-a-half I had completed my inventory (with the exception of a couple of items).
From that moment on, I committed to using the app as much as I could.
Fab or flub?
Fab! ClosetSpace is a must if you want to make the most out of your wardrobe or have an interest in doing some spring cleaning of your closet.
In the three weeks since I started using the app, I’ve found that it has made putting outfits together easier and has taught me a lot about my closet. For starters, I realized that most of my shoes and handbags are black, plus I have enough striped shirts to outfit a small village.
This was an eye-opener for me, and I’ve resolved that the next time I make a shoe or handbag purchase, I’m going to step out of my comfort zone.
I’ve also learned that there are certain pieces of clothing that I gravitate to on a regular basis and others that I ignore. The latter will likely be landing in a donation bin soon instead of taking up unnecessary space in my closet.
I’ve also found the mobile version convenient — particularly when I am out shopping and need a reminder of what’s in my closet.
My favorite feature is one that I didn’t know about initially: emails that arrive each morning with images of daily outfit inspirations (based on my preferences) for the day’s weather. That’s right. The app checks the weather for you.
The personalized aspect of ClosetSpace really seems unique. It’s almost like you have your very own stylist. Cher Horowitz would definitely approve.
