Going for gold: the best of awards season fashion
Hollywood’s 2015 awards season officially came to an end at the Oscars on Sunday, and with it came the end of the red carpet season. In one final look back at the looks that ruled the red carpet, we make our fashion picks for red carpet MVP, best-dressed couple, best accessory and more.
MVP of the red carpet
Reese Witherspoon
Because she’s an awards season veteran, it probably comes as no surprise that Wild star Reese Witherspoon hit all the right fashion notes this year. Wearing designers Calvin Klein, Tom Ford and Lanvin, Witherspoon proved she was top dog by continuously wowing us with each of her sartorial choices.
Our favorite Witherspoon look came at this year’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, when the actress showed up in a sizzling Stella McCartney gown with a plunging neckline. Wild, and wonderful!
Best dressed
Jessica Chastain at the Golden Globes
Always a red carpet favorite, Jessica Chastain topped our best-dressed list in 2012 when she turned up at the Oscars looking regal in Alexander McQueen. Fast-forward a few years and Chastain tops our Golden Globes’ best-dressed list thanks to a super sultry Versace dress that has since remained our favorite look from the 2015 awards season.
Rosamund Pike at the Oscars
After a slight fashion stumble at the Golden Globes, Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike made sure to bring her style A-game to the Oscars. The Best Actress nominee looked simply exquisite in a strapless, crimson embroidered gown by Givenchy, which featured an eye-catching slit up the front of the dress.
Camilla Alves at the Screen Actors Guild Awards
We didn’t cover the fashion at the Screen Actors Guild awards this year, but if we had, there’s no denying that Camilla Alves would have topped our list for best dressed. Looking statuesque in an aubergine gown by Donna Karan, Mrs. McConaughey’s killer curves took center stage thanks to some gorgeous draping and a dramatic side train.
Biggest risk taker
Emma Stone
If you’ve watched the red carpet each year, then you know it can get pretty predictable (we’re looking at you, Sofia Vergara). But thanks to Birdman star Emma Stone, things weren’t always so dull. From a Lanvin jumpsuit at the Golden Globes to a tuxedo gown at the Screen Actors Guild awards and eye-popping chartreuse (with matching shoes!) at the Oscars, Stone took the biggest fashion risks this awards season and they repeatedly paid off.
Best men’s fashion
Eddie Redmayne
Not only did The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne pick up the Oscar for Best Actor this year, he also managed to win our pick for the best-dressed male on the red carpet. Opting for well-tailored tuxedos by Gucci and Giorgio Armani, Redmayne proved that his fashion game is right on par with his acting chops.
Best-dressed couple
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend
Arguably the busiest duo of the awards season, power couple Chrissy Teigen and John Legend made the rounds at this year’s Golden Globes, Grammys and Oscars looking picture perfect. Not only did Legend end up picking up the Oscar for Best Original Song, but the pair also made our list for best-dressed couple on the red carpet.
Best accessory
Naomi Watts’ Bulgari snake necklace
If there’s one thing we learned from the this year’s red carpet, it’s that you can’t go wrong with a statement necklace. Stars Cate Blanchett (in Tiffany & Co.) and Margot Robbie (in Van Cleef & Arpels) chose to accent their gowns with dazzling, bold neckwear.
No necklace, however, could match up to the Bulgari snake necklace worn by Birdman star Naomi Watts at the Golden Globes. Made with white gold and diamonds, the breathtaking piece was by far our favorite acessory this awards season.
