1-23For the month of November, the Keller Public Arts exhibition theme is “We the People” and will include works from the Texas Portrait Society. View over 70 portraits by artists Gaye Sekula, Kathryn Holter, Michael Holter, Ken MacFarlane, Debra Richardson, Gene Dillard, Tim Wosley and Stefan Huyghe. 3Celebrate 35 years of service to seniors in the community with the Mid-Cities Care Corps. The annual Festival of Friends is a ticketed event with live and silent auctions and a catered dinner. Tickets include dinner, dancing, photos and live music. Author Missy Buchanan, known for her passion for inspiration and encouragement to older adults, is the guest speaker. Auction highlights include luxury vacations to Las Ventanas Al Paraiso, Rough Creek Lodge and Hyatt Pinon Pointe, as well as a Luxor Custom Jewelers diamond necklace, gourmet dinner and wine pull. 4Naturally Sweet is the Bob Jones Nature Center’s biggest fundraiser each year, and naturally, it provides some pretty sweet services to local families. Last year’s event funded numerous camps and classes. This year’s theme is “Naturally Sweet — Under the Stars” and the center’s goal is to fund outdoor classroom space and restoration projects. Tarrant County Commissioner Gary Fickes is honorary chairman of the event, which includes tastings from local eateries, wine and cocktails, live music for dancing from the Dan Quinn Band and a silent auction. 4-5For a second year, the City of Keller hosts “I Heart BBQ,” the IBCA-sanctioned barbecue cook-off and festival. Proceeds benefit the Keller Senior Activities Center. Friday night’s activities include the Appetizer Showdown and live music. Saturday includes the cook-off judging, Tailgate Zone with live college football, and live music. This year’s headliner is Parker McCollum. The I Heart BBQ 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run also takes place Saturday. Free general admission; judging, tailgating and concessions have a fee. 9Support local arts programs produced by the Arts Council of the Northeast, including the MasterWorks Concert Series and multiple children’s programs, at Taste of Northeast. Enjoy food and drink sampling from 25 local restaurants, shop gifts from local vendors and bid in the silent auction. Live R&B and funk music will be performed by Blu-Print. 12-13Keller United Method Church presents “Sharing the Joy, a gift market with handmade items from around the world.” Spend the weekend getting your holiday gift shopping done and support a worthy cause. Purchases provide support for artisans and non-profit charitable organizations that provide aid. Highlights include Russian artwork through Marfa Ministry, paper Christmas ornaments by Paper for Water and jewelry by Peg’s Mayan Jewels. 17Enjoy an early holiday favorite as Apex Art League presents the Avant Ballet production of “Nutcracker: Short and Suite” at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church. The performance includes a shortened one-act version of the classic Nutcracker ballet, complete with costumed characters and live music. The family-friendly version is approximately one hour long. 19The town of Southlake kicks off the holiday season on the third weekend again this year. Southlake Home for the Holidays begins with the tree lighting at Southlake Town Square at 6 p.m. Festivities begin at 4:30 and include caroling, crafts, photos with Santa, carriage rides, snowman building and show hill tubing. 24Before you sit down to feast, get in a little exercise at the inaugural Run with the Turkeys Trot. This family-friendly race includes a 5K and 10K course. Proceeds benefit Community Storehouse and participants are asked to bring 2-3 nonperishable food items to donate on race day. All racers receive a shirt and finisher’s medal; prizes are awarded for timed winners and best turkey costume. Register online, $20-$50 (early registration discounts). Worth the Drive
Nov. 6-Jan. 3“12 Days of Christmas” opens this month at the Dallas Arboretum. The outdoor display includes a dozen 25-foot Victorian-style gazebos encased in glass and elaborately decorated to represent each of the days in the classic carol. Each display features mechanical parts and festive music to bring the story to life. Stroll through the garden after dark during “12 Days at Night” when the gazebos are illuminated and the garden it lit with over 500,000 lights.
New this year, the DeGolyer House displays the Claus Collection Santa Exhibit. View the collection of figures throughout the festively decorated house on daily guided tours 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Wednesday evenings 6-9 p.m. Restaurant DeGolyer is also open for reservations 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays.
View the “12 Days of Christmas” Wednesday-Sunday, Nov. 9-Dec. 30, 6-9 p.m. (excluding Nov. 24 and Dec. 24-25). Evening tickets: $8. The display can also be viewed during regular Arboretum hours, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. General admission: $10-$15.
