It’s a dilemma that plagues me every time I go shopping for clothes. Should I buy a clothing item I love, even if it’s dry clean only?
If you’ve ever purchased a dry clean-only item, you’re probably aware of the commitment that comes with it. Dry clean-only items require professional cleaning (a service that can be costly if used regularly).
For this week’s Fab or Flub? column, I picked up an at-home dry-cleaning kit that isn’t new on the market but is both convenient and budget-friendly.
Available at Target, the Dryel At-Home Dry Cleaner starter kit ($9.99) is designed to be an easy at-home cleaning process that safely launders clothes without any shrinking or fading. Suitable for most fabrics (minus leather, silk, fur, suede and velvet), the three-step process can be used to refresh or deep-clean clothing in as little as 30 minutes.
The Dryel kit comes with three ultra-cleaning cloths, a booster spray and a fabric protection bag. Each ultra cleaning cloth is good for one load and each load equals up to five garments so, in total, the kit can clean up to 15 items. You can buy just the refills of the cleaning cloths, so you don’t have to buy a new kit each time you need more.
To use the kit, spot-treat any stains or heavily soiled areas with the booster spray. Afterward, place the items (remember: no more than five) and an ultra-cleaning cloth into the fabric protection bag. Zip up the bag and throw it into the dryer, set on medium, for 15 minutes for a refresh or 30 minutes for a deep clean. When the dryer stops, hang the garments to help any wrinkles fall out.
Fab or flub?
Fab. Dryel’s At-Home Dry Cleaner starter kit helps avoid regular trips to the dry cleaners. The kit is cost-effective and makes at-home dry cleaning a breeze, and it does a fantastic job of restoring dry-clean items to a pristine condition.
After using the kit to deep-clean several cashmere sweaters, I was highly impressed at how fluffy and soft the items were (most importantly, there was no shedding). From start to finish, the kit was easy to use and it worked fast enough that I could throw something in before work and have it ready to wear before I left.
I highly recommend the product to anyone looking for an alternative to dry cleaning that saves time and money.
