Nature-friendly places to go in DFW starting Aug. 20

▪ Kids can attend a free story time at 11 a.m. Aug. 20 at the River Legacy Living Science Center, 703 N.W. Green Oaks Blvd., Arlington. There’s a related activity afterward. Register by calling 817-860-6752. riverlegacy.org.

▪ Bring the whole family to “Build Like a Beaver,” an indoor program with an optional short hike along the Riverbottom Trail of the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge. It’s 1-3 p.m. Aug. 20. It’s free.

From noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 21, join Canoe Fest. Canoes, paddles and life jackets are provided. Children must be at least 5 years old and accompanied by an adult. It’s first come, first served. Meet at the Big River parking lot. It’s $5 plus admission.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25, learn about the nine-banded armadillo during an “After Hours” program. Participants meet at the front gate. It’s $10 plus admission.

Also, register for a kayak tour of the West Fork of the Trinity River that begins at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 27. Kayaks, paddles and life jackets are provided. It’s $20, $15 members. Registration required.

▪ Bee expert Ginger Gage, of T&G’s Backyard Bees, will speak at the Arlington Organic Garden Club meeting, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25, at the Bob Duncan Center, 2800 S. Center St., Arlington. Social time will begin at 7. For more information, call Bob Ressl at 817-706-7677.

▪ The Botanical Research Institute of Texas and the city of Fort Worth are selling 55-gallon Upcycle rain barrels, $75, and compost bins, $130, through Sept. 2. Orders: upcycle-products.com/britfw. Pickup date and place: 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 10 at BRIT, 1700 University Drive, Fort Worth. brit.org.

▪ Get your gardening questions answered with a call to the Tarrant County Master Gardener Association help desk, 817-884-1944. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

▪ Johnson County Master Gardeners also answer gardening questions and give advice 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays. Call the Johnson County Extension Office at 817-556-6370 and ask to speak to a master gardener.
