Nature-friendly activities in DFW starting Jan. 16

▪ Join a birding walk at the Southwest Nature Preserve at 8:30 a.m. Saturday,. 5201 Bowman Springs Road, Arlington. www.swnp.org.

▪ Join master naturalist Leigh Langford for a family-friendly walk through the Cross Timbers at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, at Bob Jones Nature Center. It’s $5 per person. 355 E. Bob Jones Road, Southlake. 817-491-6333; bjnc.org.

▪ Adults and kids can learn about the prairie in winter during a trail hike, 2-3 p.m. Saturday, at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge. From 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, kids can learn all about owls. Both of these activities are free with admission ($2-$5).

Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, the refuge will have a night hike. It’s $10 and includes admission. Registration is required; meet at the front gate. At 10:30 a.m. Friday, the Preschool Discovery Club will learn about beavers. It’s $8 per child with adult, $5 for members. Registration is required. The refuge is at 9601 Fossil Ridge Road, Fort Worth. 817-392-7410; www.fwnaturecenter.org.

▪ Take the kids to a free story time and activity at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the River Legacy Living Science Center. RSVP by calling 817-860-6752. Seventh- and eighth-graders will have a Science Night with food science experiments and a math challenge beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday. It’s $15, and registration is required. River Legacy is at 703 N.W. Green Oaks Blvd., Arlington. www.riverlegacy.org.

▪ Get your gardening questions answered with a call to the Tarrant County Master Gardener Association help desk, 817-884-1944. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

▪ Johnson County Master Gardeners also answer gardening questions and give advice 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays. Call the Johnson County Extension Office at 817-556-6370 and ask to speak to a master gardener.

▪ For Feb. 15, the Fort Worth Audubon Society’s deadline for community or school projects. Schools and civic organization with a birding or bird habitat conservation project may apply for funding for materials and supplies. For application and details, visit www.fwas.org.
