Prison Island, a new interactive escape adventure, is opening in North Texas

Fans of shows or movies where characters break out of prison will have a chance to try it themselves at a new interactive escape room concept opening in Grapevine this fall.

Prison Island started in Sweden and has locations in 25 countries. North Texas will be one of the few locations to open so far in the U.S.

Groups of two to five players get a shot at breaking out of a prison — not exactly like Wentworth Miller’s character Michael Scofield in “Prison Break” — but by solving tasks in each cell and racking up points with family, friends or as part of corporate team-building exercise. The adventures are for adults and kids who are 9 and above.

The Grapevine location at 2505 E. Grapevine Mills Circle will have 40 cells with challenges and puzzles for players to complete. The building used to house Daylight Golf before it closed

Prison Island’s international locations include India, Algeria, London, Denmark, Australia, Mexico City and Southern France. Photos from Prison Islands show players in different rooms completing challenges that lead to the small groups making their escape.

The challenges are designed for groups of 2 to 5 and according to the Prison Island website anyone ages 9 to 99 can play.

Here in the U.S., there are locations in Houston, Kansas City and suburban Minneapolis. Others in the pipeline are in Phoenix, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Depending on the location, players can pick from a 23-cell challenge in Southern France or a 45-cell challenge in Mexico City.

According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the company is doing a $2.6 million renovation to its new Grapevine home this summer with a completion date at the end of October.
