It’s been less than three years since Discovery Channel launched Fast N’ Loud, featuring the exploits of Dallas’ Gas Monkey Garage and its owner, Fort Worth native Richard Rawlings, but Rawlings has quickly become a star.
The show’s a big hit for Discovery, and since its debut, the garage has spun off a restaurant/concert venue, Gas Monkey Bar N’ Grill in west Dallas. (He is reportedly looking for a Fort Worth spot for one as well.)
“I like to dream big,” Rawlings, a 1987 graduate of Fort Worth Eastern Hills, told DFW.com in June 2012, shortly before Fast N’ Loud’s launch (after years of trying to get a show about Gas Monkey), and he’s backed that up. So the next logical step for a gearhead/TV star/restaurateur is a book, right?
Rawlings announced today on the Gas Monkey blog that Fast N’ Loud: Blood Sweat and Beers is due out May 12, and available for pre-order at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million. It will retail for $27.
“It’s the behind-the-scenes stuff and my backstory that will make you shake your head and say ‘Well, that explains a lot,” Rawlings wrote. “So I went [and] wrote a book about it!” Should be an entertaining read: For instance, maybe he’ll write about getting shot by a wannabe carjacker in Fort Worth when he was 22, an anecdote he told D Magazine in 2013.
Looks like Rawlings will successfully conquer the book world as well: In the comments on his post, he’s already getting requests about book shipments to Thailand, Brazil and the UK.
The book’s release was originally reported by The Dallas Morning News’ Pop Culture Blog.
