Preston’s picks: Culture Club at Verizon Theatre; John Paul White at Club Dada
Culture Club at Verizon Theatre
Nostalgia has become such a consistently powerful draw at the box office that, for most musical acts, regardless of whether they made it big the first time around or not, it’s rarely a question of if they will reunite and tour, but when. Add Culture Club to the ever-lengthening list of back-in-the-day bands that have rounded up all the original players and mounted coast-to-coast tours, allowing fans to bask anew in the glow of durable singles like Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me. Led by the irrepressible Boy George, the Grammy-winning British quartet will make the 1980s come alive again, if only for a night. With Groves.
8 p.m. Friday. Verizon Theatre, Grand Prairie. $55-$250.
John Paul White at Club Dada
Eight years have elapsed since The Long Goodbye, John Paul White’s solo debut. In the almost-decade between Goodbye and his latest record, Beulah, due out later this month, White teamed with Joy Williams to form the powerhouse folk duo the Civil Wars, which took the world by storm, thanks to its haunting 2011 album Barton Hollow (which went on to win two Grammys). The pair parted for good in 2014, and the Tennessee native has resumed his career as a solo singer-songwriter. Those aching for the rustic beauty of White’s output while in the Civil Wars will find much to embrace on Beulah, a stark, arresting collection of songs that find White in fine form. With Secret Sisters.
8 p.m. Tuesday. Club Dada, Dallas. $15-$17.
