Preston’s picks: Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop at Kessler Theater; Aubrie Sellers at Magnolia Motor Lounge
Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop at Kessler Theater
A lovely pairing of singular voices — Sam Beam, best known for his work under the moniker Iron & Wine, and Jesca Hoop, an alt-pop singer-songwriter whose career has been wonderfully eclectic to date — join forces to create a twilight-infused brand of folk music: reflective, dreamy and wistful. The brisk Love Letter for Fire, the duo’s debut recording, suggests this performance in Oak Cliff (and, really, the pair could not have found a better room in which to render these delicate, dense songs) will be a wonder — an evening of gifts, and a showcase for two phenomenal talents who could easily pack a room this size on their own. With Marlon Williams.
8 p.m. Saturday. Kessler Theater, Dallas. Sold out.
Aubrie Sellers at Magnolia Motor Lounge
Aubrie Sellers has passed through town a few times already this year — she was at Lola’s Saloon just last month — but if you missed one of her live-wire performances (or have become helplessly addicted and need another fix), the daughter of Lee Ann Womack and Jason Sellers is returning to Fort Worth for another gig in support of her arresting debut, New City Blues. Sellers’ brand of country music is rough, ragged and intense — Light of Day is a harrowing, guitar-fueled stomper — and her fulsome voice is a thing of beauty. See her now before she’s headlining rooms four times this size. With Chris Watson.
9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Magnolia Motor Lounge, Fort Worth. $10-$125.
