One of the keys to enjoying South by Southwest is understanding that, while you might have bands you want to see or venues you want to visit, flexibility is key.

After all, you’re talking about thousands of bands, dozens of venues and a small city’s worth of people trying to get here or there in and around Austin.

Things happen. Plans go awry. How you start out is not always how you end up.

All of these things I kept telling myself as I neared the 45-minute mark of sitting inside a school bus, in a parking lot, somewhere in the Hill Country, as a particularly strong spring thunderstorm rolled in.

I had driven about 35 miles southwest of Austin, to visit Willie Nelson’s Luck, where the annual Luck Reunion was again being held this year, in hopes of spending a pleasant day away from the chaos of downtown Austin.

Mother Nature, however, had other plans.

Below, in chronological order, is a real-time account of what transpired during my visit to Luck, followed by some video. (The Luck Reunion did eventually start up again, but it was far from the only SXSW event Friday thrown off by the bursts of severe weather.)
