We’re a few weeks into the new year; 2016 calendars are purchased and dates are ready to be filled in. Here’s a look at the big local events in visual and performing arts this year.

Fort Worth Opera brings JFK to the stage, the Cliburn has its seventh amateur competition, and the first Fort Worth Fringe Fest comes to the Community Arts Center.

Visual art in North Texas

Through Aug. 21: “Vermeer Suite: Music in 17th-Century Dutch Painting” at the Dallas Museum of Art. Johannes Vermeer’s Young Woman Seated at the Virginal is the inspiration for this small collection of paintings from the 17th century that feature musicians and their instruments from Vermeer and his contemporaries. 1717 N. Through April 17: Ann Veronica Janssens at the Nasher Sculpture Center. The Brussels-based artist will have her first museum exhibition in the U.S with her light-based works. Feb. 6-May 1: “American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood” at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Feb. 14-June 5: “Between Paris and Texas: Marie Cronin, Portraitist of the Belle Époque” at the Meadows Museum. Feb. 14-June 5: “Process and Innovation: Carlotta Corpron and Janet Turner” at the Meadows Museum. March 5-Aug. 7: “Discarded: Photographs by Anthony Hernandez” at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. April 17-Sept. 18: “Frank Stella: A Retrospective” at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. May 5-Aug. 21: “Joel Shapiro,” at the Nasher Sculpture Center. Shapiro will bring his geometric forms that he suspends from the ceiling. His work challenges the possibilities of balance and weight. May 22-Sept. 11: “The Brothers Le Nain: Painters of Seventeenth-Century France” at the Kimbell Art Museum. The first major exhibition in the U.S. of the three Le Nain brothers, who were active in Paris during the 1630s and 1640s. June 4-Aug. 21: “Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis” at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Sept. 24-Dec. 31: “Border Cantos Richard Misrach/Guillermo Galindo” at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. This collaboration between photographer Misrach and artist-musician Galindo examines the border between the U.S. and Mexico through large-scale photographs and musical instruments Galindo has created out of found objects along the border fence. 3501 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth. Oct. 9-Jan. 8, 2017: “Divine Felines: Cats of Ancient Egypt” at the Dallas Museum of Art. Cats and lions in ancient Egypt in mythology, kingship and everyday life from the holdings of the Brooklyn Museum. Oct. 16-Jan. 29, 2017: “Monet: The Early Years” at the Kimbell Art Museum. A groundbreaking exhibition of the earliest work of Claude Monet.
