18 pianists selected to advance to Van Cliburn Piano Competition quarterfinals

Eighteen of the best pianists from around the world have been selected to advance in the 16th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, heading to the quarterfinals.

The Cliburn, a competition hosted in Fort Worth once every four years, started with 30 competitors from countries including the U.S., South Korea, Ukraine, Canada, Japan, China, Russia and Belarus. Those 30 were selected from 388 applicants from across 51 countries.

The 2022 competition started on Thursday and ends June 18.

The 16th iteration of the competition was originally scheduled for last year but was postponed to this month due to the pandemic.

The six finalists will take the stage June 14-18 for two concertos with the orchestra and conductor Marin Alsop. The medalists are announced at a 7 p.m. awards ceremony on June 18.

The quarterfinalists are, in the random order in which they were announced:

  • Honggi Kim, 30, of South Korea
  • Yutong Sun, 26, of China

Competitors will perform in the quarterfinals Sunday and Monday.

More than 5,000 people attended the competition and online streams and videos had more than 1 million views.

Tickets can be purchased at basshall.com/tickets--events/the-cliburn. Prices start at $15.

The competition quarterfinals are held at TCU’s Van Cliburn Concert Hall.

Semifinalists will be announced on Monday.

The winner of the competition will receive a $100,000 award.
