Oscars fashion: best and worst dressed of the red carpet

Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP

The stars came out to celebrate the 87th Academy Awards on Sunday night, and the fashion was just as eclectic as the nominees for Best Picture. Here are our picks for best- and worst-dressed, as well as best and worst accessory.

The fashion winners

Rosamund Pike

Despite having a fashion misstep at this year’s Golden Globes, Best Actress nominee Rosamund Pike showed up to the Oscars red carpet looking absolutely stunning in a strapless red gown by Givenchy.

Emma Stone

While we’re still not sure what the color of Emma Stone’s Elie Saab gown was, there’s no denying that the sparkling number was one of the biggest hits on the Oscar red carpet.

Reese Witherspoon

Wild star Reese Witherspoon is never one to miss a beat at awards shows, and she continued her red carpet dominance with a sophisticated and form-fitting Tom Ford gown.

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie, an early arrival to the proceedings, got things off to a red-hot start thanks to a sultry black number by Yves Saint Laurent and a to-die-for necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels.

Red carpet trip-ups

Lady Gaga

Outfitted in custom Alaia, Lady Gaga continued her streak of quirky accessories by donning what looked like a pair of red dishwashing gloves.

Solange

While we’ve always admired singer Solange’s eccentric style, we found her red Christian Siriano ensemble to be tentlike and overwhelming for her frame.

Felicity Jones

Felicity Jones’ Alexander McQueen gown wasn’t the worse thing we’ve ever seen on the red carpet, but it was one of the biggest disappointments last night.

Marion Cotillard

From the front, Marion Cotillard’s white Dior gown gave us a mod ’60s feel. From the back, however, it looked baggy and shapeless.

Lovely addition

Proving that you can never go wrong with a bold statement, Cate Blanchett’s turquoise Tiffany & Co. necklace easily won our vote for the best accessory.

Just too much

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Ralph & Russo gown gives us another lesson in less-is-more. We wanted to pluck that giant flower — our pick for worst accessory — off her otherwise elegant shoulder.

Well done, sir

David Oyelowo

He might have been left out of the Best Actor race, but Selma star David Oyelowo went straight to the top of our list of best-dressed men when he showed up to the Oscars wearing a dapper burgundy tuxedo by Dolce & Gabbana.

Rookie mistake

J. K. Simmons

Memo to Best Supporting Actor winner and Whiplash star J. K. Simmons: Next time you come to the Oscars, leave behind the fedora and vest chain.
