The Real Story Behind That Viral Hot Air Balloon Backyard Landing Will Shock You
If you’ve been on TikTok in the last few days, you’ve probably seen the footage — a hot air balloon, decked out in yellow stars and a moon, dropping straight into somebody’s backyard in Southern California with 13 people on board. The video is wild. But the firsthand accounts from the homeowners and passengers are even wilder.
The emergency landing happened around 8:30 a.m. and was caused by weather — specifically, there wasn’t enough wind to carry the balloon.
Here’s everything you need to know about what actually happened.
A Neighbor Saw the Hot Air Balloon Land in the Yard
Hunter Perrin, the homeowner in the Temecula neighborhood in Riverside County, didn’t even realize a hot air balloon had just landed in his yard. He was watching TV. His wife, Jenna Perrin, was doing yoga.
Then a neighbor showed up at the door.
“I go and answer the door. This guy’s like, ‘They just landed in your backyard!’” Perrin told Eyewitness News. “And I’m like, ‘What!?’”
He gave a similar account to the Associated Press: “I was watching TV and my wife was doing yoga. There was a man standing in front of my door saying: ‘They just landed.’ What? I was very confused.”
What he found when he went to check was straight out of a movie.
“I open the sliding glass door, and there’s a basket full of thirteen people in my backyard! The pilot, he was masterful. He got it right down inside, like directly into the backyard, where there was nothing. The balloon didn’t catch on anything. No one was injured,” Hunter said.
It Was ‘Like Something Out of a Disney Fairy Tale’
Jenna Perrin’s reaction might be the most relatable part of the whole ordeal. She heard a sound she couldn’t identify — then ran outside to find a crowd of strangers waving at her from her own backyard.
“And I run to the backyard, and there’s a whole group of people that are just waving at me,” Jenna said. “And I’m like, ‘Oh my God. So the sound I heard was the flames?!’ And I’m like … ‘Hi!’”
She also captured the sheer absurdity of the moment in one line: “It was unbelievable, like something out of a Disney fairy tale. The balloon didn’t hit our house or our trees. It was kissing the fence.”
Why the Balloon Had to Land There
One of the passengers, Brianna Avalos, filled in the details. She and her husband were on the ride to celebrate their 10-year anniversary when the pilot told them they’d need to come down.
“He said there’s not enough wind, because the wind kind of like, stopped a little bit. And he was like, ‘We’re going to land.’ And we only had a little bit of fuel left,” Avalos told Eyewitness News.
The Balloon Company’s Response
Denni Barrett, the owner of Magical Adventure, which provides the balloon rides, did not reveal the pilot’s name but said he had “exercised great judgment” and “done the right thing,” per PBS.
Barrett also offered some dry context about their usual operations: “Most of our landings are in wine country,” Barrett said, referring to vineyards in California’s Riverside County. “Usually they’re bigger backyards.”
No Injuries, No Damage — Just a Great Story
No injuries were reported and no damage was done to the yard. The entire landing was caught on video, which is now going viral on TikTok.
“You can kind of see in the video of how they came in. He kind of plopped straight down and was moving very slowly,” Hunter said.
