Hilary Knight Reveals Shocking Truth About Team USA Olympic Gold Medal Win

Hilary Knight cemented her place in Team USA women’s hockey history at the 2026 Winter Olympics when she scored the game-tying goal in the final minutes of the gold medal game against Canada. Now, she’s revealing what she was going through during her big moment.

Knight, 36, revealed that she played at the Milano Cortina games on a torn MCL during a Monday, March 2 appearance on CBS Mornings.

“I’m not walking around the best,” she admitted. “I’m missing a few games for the [Professional Women’s Hockey League’s] Seattle Torrent now, but to be able to play through injury was definitely a mental gymnastic challenge for myself. And also physical, but we’ve got some amazing support staff that did their best to get me out there and perform at my best, as best as I could.”

Knight’s Olympic heroics came with just over two minutes remaining against Canada in the final game on February 19 to tie the game at 1-1. Megan Keller scored the game-winner in overtime for Team USA.

“I’m just riding on all the vibes, all the amazing fumes from such an incredible Olympic journey,” Knight said.

She added, “We’re going to celebrate. This legacy, forever, is together. We’re cemented. And that’s what’s so special about winning with this incredible group is now we get reunions, we get to celebrate, we get to see each other more.”

While on CBS Mornings, Knight was also asked about the controversy surrounding comments made by President Donald Trump while the Team USA men’s hockey team celebrated its gold medal win. Trump, 79, made seemingly disparaging comments about the women’s team, which had already won the gold, saying he would “probably be impeached” if he did not invite them to the White House, alongside the men.

Knight instead chose to focus on the support she has felt from fans on social media as a response to the controversy.

“Overwhelming in the best way, that [the positive comments have] been earned,” she said of the reaction. “I think you saw the most skilled team. You saw America’s team on the world’s stage doing our thing, winning a championship, winning the Olympics and being supported as such.”

Knight continued, “And to double down and have people support us when we returned back from that journey was incredible. We’re just excited to share that with our respective communities and continue to do our thing and be awesome representatives and be great humans.”

Knight had previously called Trump’s comments “distasteful and unfortunate” during a Wednesday, February 25 press conference.

“I think, just the way women are represented, it’s a great teaching point to really shine light on how women should be championed for their amazing feats,” she told reporters. “And now I sort of have to sit, or anybody has to sit in front of you and explain someone else’s behavior. It’s not my responsibility.”

Members of the USA men’s hockey team were present for Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 24, while the women’s team declined the invitation, citing scheduling conflicts. Trump claimed during his speech that the women would visit the White House “soon.”
