Oscar-winning costumes from ‘Wicked’ are on display for free at this North Texas museum

Several of the Oscar-winning costumes from “Wicked” are located right here in North Texas.

Costume designer Paul Tazewell took home a golden statute for Best Costume Design at Sunday’s 97th Academy Awards. Tazewell made history as the first Black man to win the award.

A collection of the costumes from the film are on display in the “Wicked Threads: The Artistry of Costume in Oz” exhibit at the Arlington Museum of Art.

Glinda’s “bubble dress” and Elphaba’s “defying gravity” costume are just a couple of the items on display.

The exhibit began on Jan. 17 and lasts until April 27 at 1200 Ballpark Way. The exhibition is free to attend and no tickets are required for entry, according to the museum.

“The Arlington Museum of Art consistently delivers outstanding exhibits to Arlington residents and visitors and this “Wicked” exhibit continues that trend,” President and CEO of Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau Brent DeRaad said in a news release.

The film version of “Wicked” is based on the stage musical of the same name that began in 2003.

“Wicked” is one of the longest-running Broadway shows and is still currently in production. The musical is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” which in turn is based on the novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

The film and musical follow Elphaba and Galinda, before and after they become the “Wicked Witch of the West” and “Glinda the Good.” The thrust of the story is set at Shiz University, where the two become friends.

Along with Best Costume Design, “Wicked” won Best Production Design at the Oscars and was nominated for 10 total awards. The second half of the story — “Wicked: For Good” — will release in theaters on Nov. 21.
