How to watch the Cliburn competition
It’s not every day that we in Fort Worth have an opportunity to enjoy music from some of the world’s most talented pianists. Here’s how you can experience the Cliburn competition.
What to know about attending the competition
The Fort Worth Public Library will be hosting nine free public concerts featuring eight of this year’s competitors starting Friday, May 27 through next Tuesday, May 31.
Children must be 10 or older to attend competition performances.
For preliminary and quarterfinal rounds at TCU, free parking is in several lots around the venue.
For the semifinal and final rounds at Bass Hall, unreserved parking at downtown garages is free on weekends and after 6 p.m. on weekdays.
From June 14-18, enjoy a series of free community events, including a two-day finale at Sundance Square Plaza with a family festival, concert simulcasts, and a closing party feat. Adonis Rose and the Fort Worth Jazz Orchestra.
How to get tickets
Tickets are $30 to $225. You can choose from all preliminary, quarterfinal, semifinal and final round concerts. The competition will be held June 2 to 18 at Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU and Bass Performance Hall.
Preliminary round, Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU
Thirty competitors perform a 40-minute recital, to include commissioned work of four to six minutes by Stephen Hough. Concerts beginning at 10 a.m. or 7:30 p.m. feature three pianists. Concerts beginning at 2:30 p.m. feature four pianists. Buy tickets at basshall.com.
- Thursday, June 2: 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
- Friday, June 3: 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
- Saturday, June 4: 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., followed by the announcement of quarterfinalists.
Quarterfinal round, Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU
18 competitors perform a 40-minute recital. Three pianists perform at each concert. Buy tickets at basshall.com.
- Sunday, June 5: 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
- Monday, June 6: 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., followed by the announcement of semifinalists.
Semifinal round, Bass Performance Hall
Twelve competitors compete in the semifinal round, held in two phases. Phase I: Each pianist will perform a recital not to exceed 60 minutes. The repertoire will consist of works chosen by the pianist. Phase II: Each pianist will perform a Mozart piano concerto with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas McGegan. - Thursday, June 9: 2:30 (two recitals) and 7:30 p.m. (four Mozart concertos)
- Friday, June 10: 2:30 (two recitals) and 7:30 p.m. (four Mozart concertos)
- Saturday, June 11: 2:30 (two recitals) and 7:30 p.m. (four Mozart concertos)
- Sunday, June 12: 2:30 (two recitals) and 7:30 p.m. (two recitals, followed by finalists announcement)
Final Round + Award Ceremony, Bass Performance Hall
Six competitors perform two concertos, to be selected from two separate lists, with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Marin Alsop. Note: Tickets to the June 18 final concerto include re-entry to the awards ceremony following. Buy tickets on basshall.com.
- Tuesday, June 14: 7:30 p.m. (final concerto 1)
- Wednesday, June 15: 7:30 p.m. (final concerto 2)
- Friday, June 17: 7:30 p.m. (final concerto 3)
- Saturday, June 18: 3 p.m. (final concerto 4), 7 p.m. awards ceremony.
