This lucky Fort Worth couple is getting a dream Whataburger wedding on Valentine’s Day
There’s only one thing more romantic than having your wedding at Whataburger, and it’s having your wedding at Whataburger on Valentine’s Day.
The beloved Texas fast food franchise announced the winners of its Whatawedding contest Tuesday afternoon. Six lucky couples across the state will announce their love for one another and Whataburger at six different restaurants on Friday, including a couple of Whataburger fanatics from Fort Worth.
Amy Talley and Xander Leatherwood are the lucky North Texas couple chosen in the contest. Talley is a social studies teacher at Medlin Middle School in Trophy Club, and Leatherwood is a salesman at Sewell BMW of Grapevine, and winning this contest has been almost like fate for the two of them.
After all, they ended their first date at a Whataburger in Dallas on April 27, 2017. They shared a Sweet & Spicy Bacon Burger.
At first, Talley envisioned a fairly normal wedding with three planned details: there would be Whataburger koozies, a Whataburger cake and she would walk down the aisle to surprise her fiance with a Sweet & Spicy. But then Leatherwood’s brother told her about the restaurant’s contest to host the wedding for six lucky couples, and it was like a light went off.
“At first I was like, ‘Oh, haha, a Whataburger wedding,’” Talley said. “But then I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, a Whataburger wedding! Yes, that’s perfect!’”
After the contest was announced in January, Talley submitted a 500-word essay about why she and Leatherwood would be the perfect couple for a Whatawedding. Then, on Feb. 5, she was in the middle of talking about World War I with her students when she got a notification from the company that she and Leatherwood were chosen as winners.
“All I saw was ‘Congratulations!’ and I started screaming and yelling,” she said, much to the confusion of her students.
Since she found out just a week and a half before the wedding will take place at the Whataburger in Fort Worth on North Tarrant Parkway, everything has had to come together quickly for the couple. But Talley is thrilled with everything so far: She’s wearing a dress donated by LeAnn’s Bridal. Her bridesmaids will wear orange and white striped dresses, while holding orange and white flowers. The groomsmen will wear orange bowties and suspenders.
And what’s more, her students (and anyone else who wants to join in) can tune in live to the wedding via the Whataburger website.
It’s a one-of-a-kind, laidback wedding that Talley (and her friends and family) will remember for a long time.
“That’s how we envisioned it anyway,” she said. “We’re not very traditional people, and so this is just perfect. It’s us to a T.”
