Two Visions. One Journey. The Relaunch of DETOUR.
To Our Community,
There are moments in every journey when the road ahead becomes unmistakably clear—not because the path is easy, but because the vision is right. This is one of those moments.
DETOUR was born in 2022 with a singular purpose: to tell the stories of Black travelers—not as footnotes, but as the main event. Under the founding vision of award-winning journalist and Missouri School of Journalism Meredith Chair Ron Stodghill, the brand created something rare: a platform rooted in cultural truth, distributed nationally through McClatchy, and trusted by an audience hungry for authentic representation.
Today, we are building on that foundation and preparing DETOUR for its next chapter.
A NEW CHAPTER IN LEADERSHIP
Earlier this year, I was honored to assume the role of Chief Visionary Officer for DETOUR. This is not simply a leadership transition—it is a strategic evolution.
Ron remains at the creative center of the brand as Chief Content Strategist, continuing to guide the authentic journalism and storytelling that established DETOUR as a trusted voice. Together, we are expanding the infrastructure, partnerships, and platforms that will allow DETOUR to grow its impact and reach.
As part of that evolution, we are proud to introduce a refreshed visual identity. More than a new logo, it represents who we are becoming. Rooted in the themes of Travel. People. Culture., the new identity reflects movement, connection, and community while remaining unmistakably centered on the women whose stories have always been at the heart of this brand. It is both a tribute to where we’ve been and a signal of where we are headed.
THE STORY WE ARE HERE TO TELL
Black women are among the fastest-growing segments of travelers in America. They are moving across cities, continents, careers, and life chapters with intention, curiosity, and purpose. Yet too often, their stories remain underrepresented.
DETOUR exists to change that.
Our editorial focus is sharpening around Black women as travelers, entrepreneurs, cultural architects, and community builders. From our Who Owns the Flavor? series spotlighting Black women culinary entrepreneurs to the continued expansion of the DETOUR Travel Club, every initiative we launch will celebrate the richness, influence, and global impact of Black women.
WHERE DETOUR AND FROM HERE TO THERE® MEET
From Here to There® was created for women navigating life’s most important transitions—the moments when the map you’ve been following no longer reflects the road you’re meant to travel.
Through conversations, coaching, community, and storytelling, From Here to There® helps women answer two powerful questions:
What now? And what’s next?
While DETOUR and From Here to There® are separate brands with distinct missions, they share a common purpose: empowering women through movement, discovery, and transformation.
DETOUR tells the stories.
From Here to There® helps women see themselves in those stories.
DETOUR explores destinations, culture, and experiences.
From Here to There® explores purpose, transition, and possibility.
Together, they create a powerful ecosystem for women who are moving—geographically, professionally, personally, and spiritually—and who seek both inspiration and community along the way.
The relationship between the two is not accidental.
It is intentional.
And together, they allow us to meet women wherever they are on their journeys.
WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON
Execution is the language of vision, and we are speaking it clearly.
In the months ahead, you will see:
- DETOUR’s refreshed brand identity and expanded editorial direction across all platforms.
- New multimedia experiences that blend journalism, storytelling, travel, and personal transformation.
- The launch of SHE Owns the Flavor™, a co-branded series celebrating Black women culinary entrepreneurs in New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis, and beyond.
- Signature destination experiences and retreats designed for women seeking adventure, clarity, and connection.
- Expanded reach through McClatchy’s national network, connecting millions of readers through the Miami Herald, Kansas City Star, Charlotte Observer, and other leading publications.
- New opportunities for community, conversation, and collaboration through both DETOUR and From Here to There®.
THE ROAD AHEAD
The future of storytelling belongs to platforms rooted in truth, possibility, and community.
That is what we are building.
Not just a publication.
Not just a podcast.
But an ecosystem that celebrates where women have been, honors where they are, and inspires where they are going.
Every road has led us here.
And from here, the journey is just beginning.
With vision, purpose, and momentum,
Daphne Bryson Jackson
