Big Freedia debuts “Hey Queen” video for Netflix’s ‘Queen Charlotte’
The “Queen of Bounce Music” has teamed up with Netflix to create a theme song fitting for another queen.
The streaming giant tapped bounce music artist Big Freedia to remix the theme song for their newest period drama, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story”.
The video for “Hey Queen” premiered Monday, just in time for the May 4 premiere of the six-episode series.
The vivid video starts with words of affirmation and regal mentions by real-life royalty such as former First Lady Michelle Obama, R&B superstar Jill Scott, and the late Hollywood great, Cicely Tyson. Directed by New Orleans native Edward Buckles, the music video pays homage to the significance of HBCU royal court culture. With depictions of local streets in NOLA, it also serves as a love letter to the rich history of New Orleans, with Freedia as the perfect pen.
The video even included students of the historical HBCU, Xavier University of New Orleans. Included in the mix, along with student leaders of the university, were Mr. and Miss Xavier University, their Royal Court, the Golden Sound Marching Band and Golden Starlettes Dance Team.
According to the official news release, on Saturday, April 15, “Netflix will partner with Xavier and Big Freedia for a ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’-inspired dance party featuring a performance from New Orleans icon and Queen of Bounce herself on the school’s campus titled the ‘Spring Waltz.”
The series is one of the newest additions to Netflix’s Strong Black Lead listings. The series is written and produced by Shonda Rhimes and her production company Shondaland. Tom Verica is noted as the director and executive producer for the series as well.
The new drama is centered on Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power. This Bridgerton-verse prequel tells how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in “Bridgerton.”
