Fenty x Puma is back and here are 5 Black-owned sneaker brands you should know
The Fenty x Puma line by Rihanna is being brought back and fans are hype.
On Wednesday, Puma made the announcement by posting a very brief message on Instagram confirming the return of the Fenty x Puma collection, which was designed in collaboration with Rihanna. Both logos and the straightforward phrase “She’s Back” were shown in the image along with the caption “Coming soon.”
The news itself is not surprising, but the musician-turned-business mogul’s casual announcement was classic Rihanna. The partnership between Rihanna and Puma is strong and has lasted for nearly a decade. She was appointed Women’s Training Ambassador and Women’s Creative Director for Puma in 2014, noted Complex, and went on to debut a line of successful sneakers. She also presented multiple shows at New York Fashion Week to rave reviews from both the press and customers. Her last line for Puma came out in 2017, and she has since taken an indefinite break from working with the brand to focus on her own endeavors.
In 2019, Rihanna became the first Black woman to launch a luxury line with the heavyweight fashion conglomerate LVMH with the launch of her ready-to-wear line, Fenty; two years later, the brand reportedly closed due to declining sales. According to Vogue, there has been no public announcement of what the new Puma collaboration will consist of, or even a release date, as of yet.
The Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin lines, as well as the Savage X Fenty lingerie collection and fashion shows broadcast on Amazon Prime, have been huge successes for Rihanna. It’s safe to assume that whatever she designs for Puma this time will be just as successful as her previous collaborations with the company.
In the Black community specifically, there exists a deep-rooted sneaker culture in which sneakers and other forms of streetwear footwear are valuable assets and integral parts of one’s individual tastes and sense of style. To mark the occasion, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best Black-owned sneaker brands. Many of these brands are making waves in their own fields and merit equal coverage along with the industry’s heavy hitters.
