Beyond New Orleans with Tonya Boyd-Cannon

DETOUR caught singer Tonya Boyd-Cannon just 30 minutes before her appearance at the Fried Chicken Festival in New Orleans.

Boyd-Cannon, a native of New Orleans, opened up about the deep-running culture of Lousianna and how it makes her connect to her ancestors.

“The minute you hear a bass drum, baby, you don’t know what to do, because the heart responds to it and the spirit receives it!” Boyd-Cannon told DETOUR at New Orleans Lakefront. “We’re always welcoming ancestors as they speak to us.”

As her performance time neared, Boyd-Cannon switched to talking about her tour experiences and stage presence.

“When I am on stage, I give all of myself and the crowd gives that back to me,” she told DETOUR. “So, it is important to be you, because everybody else is taken.”
