How Genevieve Collins is Helping Texans Navigate Civic Education
A strong civic education is the cornerstone of effective participation in democratic processes. This is why Genevieve Collins, the Texas Director of the non-profit Americans for Prosperity, is actively working toward helping her fellow Texans understand crucial concepts like property taxes and the many facets involved in navigating them.
What is Americans for Prosperity?
Americans for Prosperity-Texas (AFP-TX), a trusted, nonpartisan, non-profit grassroots organization, focuses on civic education, especially regarding public policies related to property taxes, affordable healthcare, and other economic issues.
The Texas chapter, led by Collins, is dedicated to providing everyday citizens with the necessary insight and structure to comprehend policies discussed in local decision-making. This empowers citizens to stay informed on the issues that are most important to them.
AFP is currently running its “Freedom is Bigger in Texas” campaign, a statewide property tax education tour designed to help Texans understand how property taxes are calculated, how appraisals impact bills, and how local bond elections affect long-term costs.
Collins and other leaders in AFP’s roster created the campaign to provide citizens with clear, accessible information so they can confidently participate in civic processes. As the campaign progresses, it will maintain its focus on housing affordability and cost-of-living challenges in Texas communities.
Genevieve Collins’s Role in Educating Her Fellow Texans
As a seventh-generation Texan with a background in education and business, Collins has seen firsthand the challenges many Texans face when it comes to understanding complex concepts regarding tax rates, appraisals, bond elections, and how these concepts actually function in practice. Her time spent in local politics also allowed her to directly interact with and listen to people who expressed how these and other issues affected their families.
During this time, Collins found that many people wanted to be engaged, but they often felt that they didn’t have clear, accessible information about the decisions impacting their finances. This lack of transparent communication drove her to focus on civic education through grassroots organizations like AFP, where she could meet more people where they’re at and encourage them to ask questions so they could be more engaged with their communities.
Collins’s commitment to future generations was recently further strengthened when she became a mother. Her desire to help families build their lives in Texas was, and remains, mirrored in her desire to support her own family’s wellbeing.
None of this is to say that Collins has told or is telling people what to think; however, she remains firmly dedicated to education over advocacy. Rather than convince people how they should feel about certain topics, she simply helps people understand issues so they can form opinions of their own. This approach is vital to maintaining AFP’s standing as a nonpartisan organization, as the information she provides is intended to be useful to people of all backgrounds and lifestyles.
Staying Engaged and Informed
A major part of Collins’s and AFP’s efforts is helping people not only get engaged in local decision-making, but also remain that way so they can continue to help their communities long after the Freedom is Bigger in Texas campaign tour ends.
As such, participants, as well as those who are simply interested in what Collins and AFP have to share, are encouraged to stay engaged and informed through ongoing content and social platforms, particularly through Freedom is Bigger.
Although not everyone will agree on how to handle issues like property taxes and appraisals, everyone can benefit from understanding how they work and why they matter. Genevieve Collins and Americans for Prosperity are playing a key role in giving Texans the tools they need to make informed decisions on their own so they can more effectively perform their civic duties as citizens of the state of Texas.
