Time-lapse video captures massive storm cloud rolling over downtown KC
If you were out at one of the varied outdoor events Friday, you probably noticed the big ominous storm cloud that moved across Kansas City.
Roeland Park storm photographer Stephen Locke did too, and captured it in a time-lapse movie. Locke’s photography was featured in a Star Magazine story in July.
He was perched by the Liberty Memorial overlooking downtown and captured an arcus cloud over Kansas City. The low, horizontal cloud was the leading edge of the thunderstorm that rolled across the city that night.
He posted the video and a photograph to his website saying, “Hey Kansas City, where were you Friday night August 29th? While you were at Sporting KC, Irish Fest, Crossroads, Grinders, Santa-Cali-Gon, Starlight or the Plaza, this was sneaking up behind you! My cameras were ready.”

A few days later, Locke noted on his blog that the “Arcus Cloud Kansas City” video earned a Staff Pick from the video-sharing site Vimeo.
“I shot this movie in Kansas City Friday night August 29,” he wrote. “After 24 hours in post production, I uploaded it to Vimeo the following night.
“Two days later it’s gathered 65,000 views and named a Vimeo Staff Pick … It feels pleasant to have my work recognized in this manner! Supercell time lapse cinematography is what I do and love.”
He wrote that he will release more videos in the coming months as he finishes post production from the 2014 storm season.
