DALLAS, Texas Veteran fans of open wheel racing will be disappointed to know that the status this sport enjoyed for decades is never returning, but disregard the alarmists that say this sport is a giant box of zero.
Open wheel racing, and more specifically the Indy Racing League, is like most other sports in that its just niche.
When open wheel racing is done right, it’s a far superior product to NASCAR (save for Talladega).

As someone who grew up following this sport not too far from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, it is rather sad to see open wheel racing’s fall, but the same can be said of everything but football (looking at you, baseball).
The defending champion of the Firestone 600, Mr. Ed Carpenter, was in Dallas on Wednesday and was nice enough to give me a ride in his two-seater Indy Car, and take a few questions as well.
