Dallas City tops Vaqueros in first leg of Trinity River Cup
Dallas City FC scored in stoppage time to defeat the Fort Worth Vaqueros 3-2 on Friday night in the first leg of the Trinity River Cup.
Dallas City scored in the 13th minute, but the Vaqueros tied it when forward Corwin Carbonell slipped behind the defense to score in the 22nd minute.
Jorge Deleon gave Fort Worth a brief 2-1 lead with a goal. But Dallas City rallied with two goals for the victory.
“I thought it was an excellent game,” Vaqueros coach Mark Snell said. “We feel very confident going into next week’s second leg.”
Due to the away-goals scoring, the Vaqueros could claim the Trinity River Cup next week with a 1-0 or 2-1 home win.
“Our goal was to win the game but we also wanted to score goals in case of the away goals rule in leg 2. Unfortunately the team again played well but let in soft goals,” Snell said.
“It was a tough loss but we still have an opportunity to secure the Cup,” Vaqueros defender Joseph Cervantes said. “The team played well, but gave up some soft goals including one in stoppage time again. We are looking forward to next week.”
The second leg of the aggregate scoring series is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 24 at Martin Field on the Texas Wesleyan campus.
