The Kentucky Derby is one of the biggest mainstream sports in the country.

Similar to the NFL's Super Bowl, soccer's World Cup and of course the Olympic Games, the Kentucky Derby has massive mainstream appeal. It's one of those events that the common man tends to pay attention to each year, not just sports fans.

Short of being in Louisville, Kentucky, can get a feel of the event at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, complete with the annual ladies hat contest.

Gates open at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in Grand Prairie. The Kentucky Derby will be simulcast at 5:34 p.m.

The track's annual Kentucky Derby Hat contest will have a payout of $500. In addition, there will be two grand prize giveaways: One for the most creative hat and one for the most stylish hat. Three hats will earn honorable mention and receive "A Day At the Races" package.
