Cowtown organizers have canceled Saturday’s races and delayed the opening of The Cowtown Marathon Expo at Will Rogers Memorial Center.
The half marathon, marathon and ultra marathon will start at 8 a.m. Sunday. They were originally scheduled to start at 7 a.m.
The expo will be open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. There will also be packet pickup from 5:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, and the expo will remain open throughout the race for shopping.
But runners are encouraged to pick up their packets on Saturday because workers won’t be able to accommodate everyone on Sunday morning.
Saturday’s runners may still pick up their packets even though the races were canceled. Runners can also register for Sunday’s races on Saturday. There is no race-day registration.
Cowtown organizers said Saturday that those registered for the Saturday 5K and 10K races would be able to earn medals in those events by completing a virtual race. Find more details here or on the Cowtown Marathon Facebook page.
“Participant safety is priority one and conditions don’t appear favorable for today and Saturday morning,” executive director Heidi Swartz said in a written statement. “We’ve spoken with city officials and the National Weather Service (NOAA) and feel confident that Sunday’s events can proceed.”
An ice storm greeted the 210 runners who showed up in the Stockyards for the first Cowtown marathon in 1979.
About 30,000 had registered for this weekend’s events.
