1 Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Doug Free, Orlando Scandrick and Sean Lee were among the players who were given a “veterans day” off on Wednesday. DeMarcus Lawrence also didn’t practice as the Cowboys continue to monitor players coming off injuries. Left tackle Tyron Smith went through individual drills, but did not participate in team drills. Chaz Green took first-team reps for Smith, and Bryan Witzmann and Ryan Mack alternated in replacing Free.

2 Running back Ezekiel Elliott practiced for the second consecutive day after a two-week break to nurse a hamstring injury. Elliott went through team drills in limited fashion, never carrying the ball. Elliott played only a handful of snaps before heading to the other field to resume conditioning work. Rod Smith wasn’t available in the backfield as he is still dealing with an illness. That left Alfred Morris and Darius Jackson sharing the carries on the final practice of camp.

3 Dak Prescott went 12-of-17 passing in his final day of camp. Jameill Showers went 10-of-16. Showers benefited from a nice catch by Brice Butler, who hauled in a one-handed pass falling down on the near sideline. But Showers did have a pass batted down and had one broken up by cornerback Deji Olatoye.

4 Kicker Dan Bailey went 1-for-2 on field goal tries in team drills. He nailed a 37-yarder to close out a scoring drive by Showers and had a 56-yard attempt into the wind bounce off the crossbar in another Showers’ drive. Bailey then went 3-for-4 in field goal drills, making from 44, 49 and 53. He missed from 51.

5 Coach Jason Garrett ended the final padded practice with a short-yardage play and the offense won. Showers hit wide receiver Vince Mayle for the score, and it continued what has been a spirited “compete” portion of practices throughout camp. Garrett said he would carry the challenge even after camp breaks. “We’re not done yet,” Garrett said. “We’ll continue doing this.”

Quote of the day

“Oh, I thought the intensity was outstanding. There’s no question about that. Our guys come to practice. We’re in competitive situations all day long and they respond to that. We have the right kind of guys. They come to work every day. They love the game. They want to get better.” — Garrett on the intensity level of Tuesday’s practice
