DeMarcus Lawrence played 27 defensive snaps last week in his Cowboys’ debut. The rookie made two tackles.
“I thought he was solid,” defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said Friday. “That’s the first time he’s ever been in an NFL game. No preseason or anything, so the speed of the game is the first thing that gets these guys. I thought he handled it pretty well. He made some nice plays out there for us. I just expect more from him, and I think we’ll get that.”
The second-round draft pick broke a bone in his right foot July 29, his first week of training camp practice. The Cowboys eventually placed him on returnable injured reserve, and he began practicing Oct. 15.
He will continue to rotate the team’s defensive ends and defensive tackles. Last week, Anthony Spencer played 37 snaps, Jeremy Mincey 53, George Selvie 32 and Lavar Edwards 12.
“We’re going to kind of [let Lawrence] grow into it and see how he’s coming,” Marinelli said. “So we’ve got a nice rotation with these guys.”
