Sunday’s game will carry more meaning for Brandon Carr.
It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month. Carr’s mom, Kathy, died July 30 after an eight-year battle with the disease. The NFL is taking part in the month by having its players wear pink cleats, wristbands and towels.
“It means a lot just because of the story behind it, my personal connection,” Carr said. “But in my case, I can smile. It’s a victory that my mom was a strong fighter — courageous. Stood there in the midst of all the cancer, everything going bad for her, and was still able to experience life and her family. That’s what it’s all about to me.
“But this month is pretty big. I know my mom would be an advocate for getting women of all ages aware and getting the proper medical attention needed to prevent or stop, whatever the case may be, or spread awareness. She was a selfless person. I mean it was never about her. She was always thinking about the next person.”
Carr missed the first weeks of training camp to spend time with his mom and family in Michigan for her final days and is still trying to digest it all. He’s had his dad, John, in town for the past two weeks, which has helped. So has wearing one of his mom’s old bracelets, so they’re “skin-to-skin still.”
“I have my moments,” Carr said. “I think about her a lot. I talk to her on a regular basis for the most part. She’s always with me. I always have my bracelets on.”
Defensive tackle Henry Melton is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Texans. He was limited in practice Friday by a hamstring injury for the third time this week.
Melton is expected to play, but could be in a limited role once again. He played 24 of 61 snaps Sunday against the Saints and could see similar action again this week.
The Cowboys have depth behind Melton beginning with Tyrone Crawford, who started in Melton’s place last week and played well. Terrell McClain and Davon Coleman are also expected to return after being inactive last week.
Asked if Crawford would start again, coach Jason Garrett said: “Still working that out as we get closer to the game as to who’s going to be available to us and what the rotation is.”
As far as others on the injury report, linebacker Bruce Carter (thigh) is listed as out, as expected. Dez Bryant (shoulder), Tony Romo (back), Rolando McClain (groin) and Anthony Spencer (knee) are all probable.
Spencer had a scheduled day off Friday, as the team continues to ease him back in.
