Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey sets franchise record against the Baltimore Ravens
One of the NFL’s best kickers since entering the league in the 2023 season, Brandon Aubrey set a Dallas Cowboys franchise record and a separate NFL record in Sunday’s 28-25 loss to Baltimore at AT&T Stadium.
Aubrey hit a 65-yard field goal in the first quarter of the Cowboys-Ravens game surpassing the previous longest field goal in franchise history, a 63-yard kick set by Brett Maher in 2019.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke after the game how reassuring it is to have Aubrey kicking for the Cowboys.
“Excited to have him as a part of the team, a weapon and we certainly all knew that if we got within most acceptable distances [and] that we could [have] gotten that ball back, we might have tied that score up at least there at the end,” Jones said. “That’s that’s the kind of confidence he gives you.”
His 65-yard field goal was the second-longest make in NFL history, just shy of Ravens kicker Justin Tucker’s 66-yard field goal against the Lions in 2021.
Aubrey talked about how the preseason helped him work on his long-distance field goals.
“It’s something where coach probably in preseason, took a big risk, send me out there to go, but in preseason it’s less of a risk. So just wanted to see if I could do it, and keep proving that I can do it. He’ll keep calling it. Get more comfortable with it. Might be a few other guys in the league who can do that as well, but maybe don’t have the coaching staff that give them the opportunity to do it,” said Aubrey.
Aubrey also set an NFL record with his second field goal, a 51-yarder, made at the end of the second quarter. The field goal was the kicker’s 15th straight made over 50 yards, the longest streak for a kicker to open his career.
Postgame, Aubrey talked about the faith Mike McCarthy has in him attempting long-field goals.
“Something that I can’t take for granted. Got a coach that believes in me and keeps calling these kicks, so I keep rewarding him with some makes,” said Aubrey. “I Just want to go out there and do my job and make sure they can rely on me... you kind of just want to be part of the team, a positive part of the team. So it’s good to have at this point in time I’ve been that.”
Aubrey made 36-of-38 field goals and 49-of-52 PATs in 2023 earning first-team All-Pro honors in his rookie season.
Aubrey is 8-of-8 so far this season with three kicks of 50-plus yards this season. The Notre Dame product has now made two sixty-yard plus field goals tying him for second all-place in Cowboys history with Greg Zuerlein and Rafael Septien.
Aubrey now only trails Brett Maher, with four made, for most all-time 60-yard plus makes in franchise history.
