Dallas Cowboys bolster depth at linebacker with former Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl MVP
The Dallas Cowboys made a move to shore up their depth at linebacker on Tuesday by signing free-agent Malcolm Smith.
Smith was one of two veterans who worked out for the team on Tuesday.
The Cowboys chose Smith over Ray-Ray Armstrong.
It was a needed move for the Cowboys because of a litany of injuries at linebacker.
Leighton Vander Esch remains sidelined with a neck injury. Luke Gifford was placed on injured reserve with a fractured forearm to make room for Smith.
Joe Thomas is dealing with a knee injury and Sean Lee is battling through a pectoral injury.
The only healthy linebackers are middle linebacker Jaylon Smith and reserves Chris Covington and Justin March-Lillard.
Smith, 30, has history with Cowboys defensive passing game coordinator Kris Richard from their days together with the Seattle Seahawks.
His career highlight came in Super Bowl XLVIII when he was named MVP of Seattle’s blowout victory over the Denver Broncos after posting nine tackles, an interception return for a touchdown and a fumble recovery.
Smith played four seasons in Seattle.
He played the 2015 and 2016 seasons for the Oakland Raiders before missing the entire 2017 season due to injury. He spent 2018 with the San Francisco 49ers before being cut in training camp this season.
Smith played in two games with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this season.
He has appeared in 102 games with 51 starts in his nine seasons, recording 393 tackles, six sacks, four interceptions, 17 pass breakups and nine forced fumbles.
